When our tax money passes through the state general fund before being allocated to local needs, it always seems to lose buying power. in regard to the overpowering need for road construction, we cannot afford the loss. it should be no surprise to anyone by now that our roads are the worst in the nation and that those of us who drive on them pay far more than the national average in repairs, tire wear and fuel consumption. the number of bad bridges in the state also is above the national average. nationwide, according to the federal highway administration's national bridge inventory, 29 percent of all bridges are either in need of repairs or too narrow or weak to handle current traffic loads. in louisiana, 35 percent of the bridges are in one of those categories. there is an obvious need for a new approach to maintaining roads and bridges. fortunately, support is growing rapidly for proposals by state rep. joel robideaux, i-lafayette, and state sen. mike michot, rlafayette, to shift sales tax revenue from the sale of automobiles from the state general fund to local governments, where it would be dedicated to road construction. the two legislators will offer the proposals in the upcoming legislative session. particularly appealing is a provision that the sales tax revenue would go to the community where the purchaser resides. if a local taxpayer were to purchase a car in shreveport, the revenue would flow back to lafayette. it is a sensible plan with a good chance of surviving inevitable legislative opposition. backing it at a recent news conference were state treasurer john kennedy, lafayette cityparish president joey durel, baton rouge mayor-president kip holden, new iberia mayor hilda curry, carencro mayor glenn brasseaux and st. landry parish president don menard. state legislators who have indicated they will support the bills include - besides michot and robideaux - rep. ernie alexander, r-lafayette; rep. don trahan, r-lafayette; and sen. don cravins jr., dopelousas. passing the bills will not be a walk in the park. as kennedy pointed out, lawmakers probably will want to know what budget cuts in other areas will be necessary if the automobile sales tax revenue goes to local governments. we agree with kennedy that this is not a major problem. we have a sound economy and a powerful budget surplus at the state level. meeting other needs of the state will not be a major problem when the automobile sales tax revenue is shifted to the local level. durel and others are vigorously promoting the plan. it is important that local residents who realize its value also become involved. it offers us an opportunity to make our roadways safer and less costly to all of us who drive them. good roads also will contribute to economic growth. the legislative session begins april 30. make your voice heard. the advertiser.
