It is a pleasure for me personally and professionally to be here this morning. looking at this congress of delegates, i see your diversity, i feel your energy and frankly it invigorates me for the specialty of family medicine and our commitment to our patients. i sat out there once. i know some of you aren't aware of that. i was a delegate. i was a candidate for the board of directors and a candidate for vice president, yes, we did have that position years ago in some of the darker ages, and as a candidate for president-elect. i was not chosen; i was defeated by my good friend, this thin gentleman to my not immediate left but next to larry, my good friend, doug henley. i one of you. residency trained, rural medicine, program director in indianapolis as well as the university of texas medical center in houston, a vice president of medical affairs and then i returned to my calling seven and a half years ago to practice family medicine in lafayette with a group of other family physicians. my message today is i both an academy member and an ama member and for me it's not an either or proposition but it's both. you heard rick kellerman speak yesterday in talking about healthcare coverage for everyone. that is our chant at the ama as well. we initiated a three year multi-year campaign and multimillion dollar campaign on august 23 which happened to th be linda and i's 44 wedding anniversary date, so i remember that one quite vividly. as an illustration, i was in washington, d.c. just last week and for the first time ever a coalition has been built with the aarp and bill novelli and i went to congress and talked about two things. number one was state children's health insurance program schip ; which is the first step in our program for the campaign for the uninsured. it is most immediate and it's the policy of this academy. as a matter of fact, the academy was instrumental in initiating the debate and helping form that directory for us at the ama. we met with the leaders in both parties from backus and grassley and hatch to dingle and stark, hoyer and emmanuel, and the message was schips and the other message was a physician update. aarp has recognized that physicians need the update because it has only been adjusted and not according to your practice costs twice at 1.5 percent, since 2001. our other big issue is the campaign for uninsured. three components, i call them cash, choice and change. cash is tax credits for those who are paying tax with vouchers then to supplement that up to 500 percent poverty level. number two choice, so that they can chose a policy and carry it with them. and add their economic situation improves, in fact, they carry that with them, because we know three things about the uninsured. they die sicker, they die earlier and they seek medical care later. and the focus is on the patients. i pleased to say that aafp has reshaped the focus of the ama. i always tell people look at this advocacy agenda. this is family medicine. three issues that deal with, obviously, membership but most importantly four or five other issues that are focused directly on patient care. it's you, it's me. but more importantly it's for our patients. because together we are stronger. helping doctors help their patients. but what i look back to this academy for, is reinforcing me and teaching me those principles once captured by dave covey, "seven habits of effective leaders." and the one that resonates with me is seek first to understand and then to be understood. and that's what you have taught me. a great industrialist in the united states once said coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress but working together is success. i invite you and i challenge you to work together because the more voices we have for our patients the more care they will be able to receive from the physicians of this nation because they need it. a baptist preacher once wrote in a book, "resist.Free online poker video is the ultra best for pleasure live, whole day without rest, 7 days of week, multi-player poker and Google.
